New Duties Towards Young Adult Carers

Commenting on new duties towards young carers under the Care Act Alan Wood, President of the Association of Directors of Children’s Services, said:

“While local authorities have always had duties towards carers of all ages what we haven’t had until recently is a universal framework that is as effective at solving difficulties for children and young people as it is at meeting the needs of adults. These two acts will support greater individual choice by enabling young adult carers to transition at the most appropriate time for them rather than at a pre-determined age. We already know that taking a whole family approach via closer and more effective working between children’s and adults’ services provides early opportunities to avoid crisis and makes the best use of resources available.”
