Impact of Reductions in Local Authority Funding

Commenting on the impact of reductions in local authority funding on children’s social care, Ian Thomas, Chair of the ADCS Resources and Sustainability Policy Committee, said:

“It is notoriously difficult to calculate spend on children’s services; due to the statutory nature of child protection we must spend in this area even if there is no budget do so. It is well known that since 2008 demand for children’s social care has continued to grow with no equivalent growth in budget and in some areas council budgets have been reduced by over 40%. If this pattern of demand continues to grow the most vulnerable will be left at risk. Irrespective of the funding available local authorities will always strive to effectively meet the needs of the children, young people and families that we serve but this is a tougher task now than ever before and we know in some places there is a real risk that core services will not be adequately funded.”
