Comment on the Data Showing the Numbers of Children Re-entering...

Responding to an enquiry from CYPNOW about the NSPCC calling for the DfE to release data of the numbers of children re-entering the care system, Andrew Christie, Chair of the ADCS Health, Care and Additional Needs Policy Committee, said:

“We look forward to the results of the research due in the autumn. Part of improving practice in this area is understanding data and trends on children’s journeys. Local authorities need to understand their local picture and be able to benchmark and learn from each other. Before data is shared and used to inform local decision making or to hold agencies to account it is important that we consider how this may be presented, understand the contextual factors and ensure its accuracy. Otherwise we risk leaving the data open to misinterpretation. This is a very important issue which hasn’t received the attention it deserves, and we welcome the spotlight being turned on it. These children need our support, just as much as children who leave care for adoption or with a special guardianship order. We look forward to working with the NSPCC, DfE and others to help our members improve every child’s journey through care.”
