Criminalisation of children in care
Stuart Gallimore, President of the Association of Directors of Children’s Services, said:
“As directors of children’s services we share the same concerns about the unnecessary criminalisation of a small number of children in care and have recently been involved in a piece of work led by the Department for Education, to develop a national protocol to address this issue. Of course, the protocol alone can’t solve everything, relationships between homes and their local police force are important as is staff training. It is also important that there is an appreciation of what lies behind a child’s disruptive behaviour, such a bereavement, earlier abuse or extreme neglect, is understood and responses are suitably proportionate. Restorative solutions are particularly relevant in these situations.”
