New wave of free schools announced

Responding to the government’s announcement on a new wave of free schools Alison Michalska, ADCS President, said:

“The government has announced a new wave of free schools today, sponsors include an existing grammar school and an independent boarding school. The move to permit grammar schools and independent schools to sponsor new free schools was first proposed in the Schools that Work for Everyone green paper. The government seems to be pushing ahead with some of its proposals despite not having published their response to the consultation yet or having had an open and honest discussion with the sector about how to mitigate and address any concerns about specific proposals.

“On top of this in this year’s Spring Budget the Chancellor announced that £320m would be invested in free schools and grammar schools – this money would be better spent on addressing some of the funding pressures that our schools are currently facing which is having a real impact on our pupils’ educational experiences.”
